The Top 5 Biggest Bourbon Myths—Debunked

Bourbon comes with a lot of opinions. Spend enough time around bars, liquor stores, or comment sections and you’ll hear the same confident claims repeated over and over. The problem is that many of these “rules” aren’t rules at all—they’re myths that have stuck around long enough to feel true.

Let’s clear the air and break down five of the most common bourbon myths.

Myth #1: Older Bourbon Is Always Better

Age matters in bourbon, but more age doesn’t automatically mean more quality. Bourbon is aged in new, charred oak barrels, and after a certain point, extra time can overpower the whiskey with bitter oak and dryness. Many excellent bourbons fall in the 6–10 year range. Age is a factor—not a guarantee.

Myth #2: Higher Proof Means Harsher Bourbon

Proof is about concentration, not aggression. Higher-proof bourbons often deliver more flavor, not more burn, because they haven’t been diluted as much. A few drops of water can open them up beautifully. Some lower-proof bourbons actually burn more because there’s less flavor to balance the alcohol.

Myth #3: “Smooth” Means It’s a Good Bourbon

“Smooth” is one of the most overused words in bourbon. Sometimes it just means low proof. Sometimes it means sweet. And sometimes it means there isn’t much flavor at all. A great bourbon doesn’t need to be smooth—it needs balance, character, and flavors you enjoy.

Myth #4: Bourbon Should Only Be Drunk Neat

There is no single “correct” way to drink bourbon. Neat, with ice, with a splash of water, or in a cocktail—all are valid. Ice can highlight sweetness, water can tame heat, and cocktails can showcase bourbon in an entirely different way.

Myth #5: Expensive Bourbon Is Always Better Bourbon

Price is influenced by age statements, scarcity, branding, and hype. While some expensive bourbons are excellent, plenty of affordable bottles punch well above their price. There are exceptional bourbons under $40 that outperform bottles costing two or three times as much. Cost reflects demand—not guaranteed quality.

The Proof Point

Bourbon doesn’t need myths or rules to be enjoyable. Let go of expectations around age, proof, price, and tradition—your palate is the only thing that matters.
